Mission
The Marine GIS Group — a specialized research unit of the Laboratory of Environmental Quality and Geospatial Applications (LEQAGA), Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean, Greece — advances the understanding of coastal and marine environmental processes through innovative geospatial technologies. We develop and apply Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing, and spatial analysis methodologies to support sustainable ocean management, evidence-based policy, and marine spatial planning across the Mediterranean and beyond.
Vision
To be a recognized center of excellence in marine GIS applications within the Laboratory of Environmental Quality and Geospatial Applications (LEQAGA), bridging cutting-edge research with practical solutions for environmental monitoring, climate adaptation, integrated coastal zone management, and the sustainable development of marine renewable energy — serving the Department of Marine Sciences and the University of the Aegean, Greece.
The Group
The Marine GIS Group operates within the Laboratory of Environmental Quality and Geospatial Applications (LEQAGA) at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean, Greece. Our team combines expertise in:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) — spatial data modeling, WebGIS platforms, multi-criteria analysis
- Marine Renewable Energy — offshore wind farm siting, geospatial optimization, environmental impact assessment
- Coastal Zone Management — marine spatial planning, decision support systems, stakeholder engagement
- Marine Ecology & Water Quality — eutrophication assessment, nutrient dynamics, pollution monitoring
- Numerical Weather Prediction — regional atmospheric modeling, air-sea interaction studies
Remote Sensing supports our work across all research axes as a foundational methodology — satellite data integration, SAR imagery, and sea surface temperature mapping are embedded within our geoinformatics, marine spatial planning, and climate research rather than standing as a separate primary focus.
Research activities are carried out in fully equipped laboratories of the Laboratory of Environmental Quality and Geospatial Applications (LEQAGA) at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean, with access to reliable field instruments for in-situ measurements and the educational/research vessel R/V Amfitriti for sampling cruises in the Aegean Sea.
